E3 2017 Recap: Best of Sony

E3 2017 Recap: Best of Sony

Sony set the bar so high in its previous press conferences, but this year lacked the same energy and fresh content as the previous. It is probably due to the fact that Sony have really nothing to fight for. They have clearly done their homework in the past. The PS4 was said to have sold 4:1 to the XBOX one. Last year the PS4 Pro was unveiled, the new 4k enhanced PlayStation 4 which didn’t do badly in terms of sales. So we all could predict that there was going to be no new hardware unveiling at this conference.

Regardless, Sony had plenty of big titles to show during its lean one-hour presentation, like God of War, Days Gone, and the exclusive Spider-Man game. Here’s a rundown of was shown off in case you missed the show (or just don’t want to watch an archived version with wonky audio).

Surprise pre-show game announcements

Sony went against the ordinary and pretty much snuck in few reveals of unannounced games into the pre-show leading into the main event.  The standout game was Hidden Agenda, the next project from Until Dawn studio Supermassive Games, which highlights the new PlayLink system that turns smartphones into makeshift PS4 controllers (similar to the You Don’t Know Jack games, which you should totally play if you haven’t already). PlayLink turns this crime thriller about a serial killer named The Trapper into a quasi-multiplayer affair, though you can still play solo if you so choose: up to five people can vote for in-game choices using their phones, then watch the tense police drama play out based on their decisions. It’s a smart response to the way some people played Until Dawn in groups, voting how the main player should proceed.

The return of the Uncharted series with stunning new adventures

The latest reveal of the cinematic trailer for Uncharted: The Lost Legacy gives a closer look at some of the gorgeous new ruins and areas players will able to explore in Naughty Dog’s next epic. Announced in December, The Lost Legacy is a spinoff of the main Uncharted franchise and the first game in the series to not star hero Nathan Drake. (He retired from treasure hunting after last year’s Uncharted 4.) The game pairs Uncharted 2 treasure hunter Chloe Frazer with the mercenary Nadine Ross from last year’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is scheduled to be released on PlayStation 4 on August 22nd.

A nice new age for Horizon Zero Dawn with Frozen lands DLC

A snowy post-apocalyptic wasteland awaits in the Horizon: Zero Dawn DLC, The Frozen Wilds. An extremely brief trailer showed Aloy, clad in her enhanced techno-armor and ready to hunt her share of robo-dinos. The DLC will launch later in 2017.

Cool “Days gone” gameplay

We got another glimpse of days gone a zombie apocalypse game from Blend studios.  The developers noted that weather conditions and the time of day affect the number of freakers and humans you’ll encounter. For instance, the zombie wolves from the first demo are nowhere to be seen here. On the other hand, freakers appear in greater numbers in the cold. Weather conditions also affect bike handling on roads, which is another nice touch. The video shows a few of the HUD elements as well, which were turned off for the initial demonstration. Days Gone does not yet have a release date.

Intense trailer showcased for Call of duty: WW2

Sledgehammer Games’ next Call of Duty, which takes the series back to its World War 2 roots, got an intense gameplay trailer set in the trenches, with flamethrowers roasting Nazis and Allied troops getting gunned down in droves. Massive shootouts take place in snowy fields, bombed-out cities, on giant naval warships – every kind of WW2 warzone you can think of. Call of Duty: WW2 launches November 3, 2017.

Skyrim for VR officially unveiled

Bethesda announced during Sony’s E3 2017 conference that The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim will be coming to PlayStation VR. It’s even coming sooner than you would think. Fans of the series can expect to experience Skyrim VR this November.

While it was no surprise that Fall Out 4, and even Doom VFR, was coming to VR, this is the first news we have heard of Elder Scrolls getting the same treatment. The virtual reality Skyrim experience will give players the ability to experience everything that the original Skyrim has to offer because it will include the entire game with refurbished graphics. It will also include all of the add-ons that are currently available: Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn. Sony’s conference wasn’t the first and only conference to contain Skyrim news. Earlier this week, we also saw that the Dragonborn can dawn the costume and weapons of the Hero of Time on the Nintendo Switch port of Skyrim.

New Spiderman trailer looks amazing

The gameplay looks awesome. This, easily, just jumped to the top of our most anticipated games list. The mechanics seem fluid, the  fighting sequences are outstanding, and we love the character of Spider-Man. His wittiness and constant jokes really capture the essence of who he really is. The game is also set in an open-world setting, which reminds us of Spider-Man 2. Without a doubt, Spider-Man 2 is the best Spider-Man game. Even then, this one just might top it. A nice twist is also at the end of the trailer, revealing Miles Morales. We can’t wait for this game.

Spider-Man launches in 2018.
